The squadron is specialized in operating S-100 unmanned air vehicle (UAV), or drone. Manufactured by the Austrian company Schiebel, this camcopter S-100 has a proven capability for military surveillance. The vertical takeoff and landing capability eliminates the need for a prepared area or supporting launch or recovery equipment. It operates day and night under adverse weather conditions, with a range out to 200km, both on land and sea, according to its manufacturer.
The S-100 navigates automatically via pre-programmed GPS waypoints or can be operated directly with a pilot control unit, called cube. Missions are planned and controlled via a simple point-and-click graphical user interface. Real-time high-definition payload imagery is transmitted to the control station so that leaders can
orchestrate and oversee the mission.
